Reviving The Old Fashion Family Picnic

In days gone by, family picnics at a lake, park or even in the backyard during balmy summer or spring days were common occurrences. Nowadays, however, it seems families barely have enough time to eat together at all, let alone plan a big picnic. It is possible to revive this old fashion and cost-effective family outing and make it fun and tasty, too. There is no reason to think all family days have to end with a trip to the drive through for an expensive dinner or lunch on the go.

picnic basketThe trick to planning a family picnic does not always lie in the planning. It’s often all in the spontaneity. If your family normally has a jam-packed schedule and doesn’t enjoy a lot of time together, working on the fly is often what is required. On a nice day when there isn’t much going on, pack a picnic basket with a few food items, toss a ball or Frisbee into the car and head on out to a local park. If something more elaborate than the bread, peanut butter and jelly that is in the cabinet is desired, a quick detour to a grocery store can solve the problem entirely.

The foods to pick up on the fly will depend on where you’re going for your picnic. If you’re heading to a park where grills are available, for example, you might want to grab barbecue gear, potato salad and (compostable or recycled) disposable plates. If something a little more simple is desired, select the makings for fresh sandwiches, pick up store fried chicken or what ever else appeals to you at the moment. Even fresh fruit, bread and cheese can be fun when eaten on a picnic blanket in the great outdoors!

Now, should you have the time to actually plan a picnic outing and you adore cooking, the sky’s the limit. If the weather forecast looks good on a vacation day or weekend, start the preparations the night before. Plan your menu, pack an honest to goodness picnic basket with eating accoutrements and a blanket to sit on and even whip up some cookies for dessert. Have a little fun and keep your family’s favorite flavors in mind.

Carving out time for the family doesn’t have to involve expensive trips or costly meals. Something as simple as a basic picnic can bring everyone together and create memories that last.

With the right ambition, you can revive the old fashion picnic and make it a part of your own family’s traditions. This very simple and basic undertaking can work wonders for bringing families together.
