I decided to try something to wean myself off coffee a bit. I bought a sample pack of Teeccino herbal caffeine free coffee substitute. It’s made from roasted chicory (which is actually an old Southern coffee substitute, it’s still popular in New Orleans). Chicory contains inulin, which is a fiber that is good for the digestion and elimination. Ground almonds, dates, roasted carob and orange peel. Oddly enough, you don’t taste the almonds, orange peel or dates at all in the finished product.

I put half the packet and 3 cups of water into the coffee pot and hit brew. The verdict? Not bad. A nice hot morning beverage. It was a tad weak, so next time I’ll try it with less water or more Teeccino. The Teeccino has a multi purpose grind that works best with a flat bottom filter shape. If your coffee maker has a cone shaped filter, the multi purpose grind will make the Teeccino taste a bit weak. It really tastes like a weakly brewed cup of mild coffee.

I think it would be excellent mixed with regular coffee beans in order to reduce the actual amount of coffee you’re getting. But it would still have a good strong coffee flavor. Reading the reviews at Amazon, I can see that others have tried that with good results.

Teeccino would be great for pregnant or nursing moms who are trying to reduce their caffeine consumption but who like a nice hot cup of comfort in the mornings. You can find Teeccino at Amazon.com

Another reviewer named Dave had this to say: Teeccino Herbal Coffee of a really great coffee alternative. Teeccino has no caffeine and is all natural. Teeccino Herbal Coffees offer many great flavors and brews in the coffee maker just like regular coffee.

I used to drink a lot of coffee at work and at home. I felt like it was causing my body some problems, such as heart problems, etc. My wife mentioned Teeccino to me and I gave it a try.

This coffee has a really great scent and tastes very smooth and delicious. There are a bunch of different flavors, ranging from what tastes just like a plain old cup of coffee, to Chocolate Mint, Hazelnut, and (my favorite) Vanilla Nut. They even have organic varieties.

I have a teenage son that likes to drink coffee, but we really didn’t want to get him hooked on caffeine. With Teeccino he can now drink “coffee” with us all the time and we don’t have to worry about the health risks.

International Coffee Recipes

If you’re a coffee drinker and looking for new ways to spice up one of your favorite beverages, try considering some of these international recipes that present both interesting and tasty combinations:

Turkish Coffee

3/4 cup of water
1 tablespoon sugar
1 tablespoon ground Coffee
1 cardamom pod

1) Combine water and sugar in a small saucepan.

2) Bring the mixture to a boil and then remove from the heat.

3) Add the coffee and cardamom.

4) Stir well and return to heat.

5) When the coffee foams up – remove from the heat and let grounds settle.

6) Repeat twice more, pouring into cups – allowing the grounds to settle before drinking.

Mexican Spiced Coffee

3/4 cup brown sugar (firmly packed)
6 cloves
6 julienne slices of orange zest
3 cinnamon sticks
6 tablespoons of coffee (NOT instant)

1) In a large saucepan, heat six cups of water with the brown sugar, cinnamon sticks, and cloves over moderately high heat until the mixture becomes hot. Make sure not to let the mixture boil.

2) Add the coffee, bringing the mixture to a boil.

3) Allow it to boil for three minutes, making sure to stir it on occasion.

4) Strain the coffee through a fine sieve and serve in coffee cups with orange zest.

Irish Coffee

1 teaspoon sugar
3/4 cup to 1 cup of strong black coffee
1 1/2 ounces of Irish whiskey
Whipped Cream

1) Dissolve the sugar in black coffee within an Irish coffee glass or a heat-resistant, non-metallic glass, cup or mug. Make sure not to use a glass that possesses a metallic trim.

2) Heat the ingredients (uncovered) in a microwave oven for one to two minutes or until the mixture becomes hot.

3) Stir in the Irish whiskey.

4) Carefully float a spoonful of whipped cream on top.

Gaelic Coffee

Freshly made black coffee
Scotch whiskey
Demerara (raw brown) sugar
Heavy cream (whipped until thick)

1) Pour the coffee into a warmed glass.

2) Add the whiskey and sugar to taste. Stir well.

3) Pour some lightly whipped cream into the glass over the back of a teaspoon.

Canadian Coffee

1/4 cup of pure maple syrup
1/2 cup of rye whiskey
3 cups of coffee (hot, black, and double strength)

Topping:
3/4 cup of whipping cream
4 teaspoon of pure maple syrup

1) To make the topping, whip the cream with maple syrup – just until soft mounds form. Set aside.

2) Divide the maple syrup and whiskey among four warmed heatproof glass mugs or goblets.

3) Pour in the coffee to one inch of the top.

4) Lastly, spoon topping over coffee.
